RETRACING Ballarat's QUEER FOOTPRINTS

As part of the 2024 Victoria's Pride celebrations, we are working with the Victorian Government and Midsumma to ensure statewide representation of LGBTQIA+ communities. Explore the queer history of the Ballarat Area (Wadawurrung country) with our project Queer-ways: Retracing Ballarat's Queer Footprints.

Join us on our regional road trip for an overview of Ballarat’s queer history or explore our illustrated Augmented Reality map guided by local Lance DeBoyle.

By retracing queer footprints, we can step into a future where all of our histories are celebrated and acknowledged.

Exhibition

This digital exhibition showcases a re-telling of Ballarat's queer history through the voice of Ballarat's Mr Entertainment, Lance DeBoyle

After initial research supported by the Australian Queer Archives and community consultation directly. with Victoria's LGBTQIA+ community, LUCIANO and George Keats have charted queer experiences, locations of significance, and memories onto an illustrated Augmented Reality map of the town.

If you are on a mobile device and don't have access to multiple screens to view the AR, explore our mobile exhibition here.

To view the exhibition:

  1. To explore the augmented reality map, scan the QR code below to download the EyeJack app. If you already have the app, scan the QR code in camera mode.

  2. Hold your smartphone camera in front of the artwork. Try to initially capture the whole width of the artwork on your phone screen. Once the AR begins you can move closer to zoom in or move further away to zoom out.

  3. Watch and listen as the maps come to life retracing Ballarat's queer footprints.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Queer-ways was established on the unceded traditional lands of the Wurundjeri nation in the Kulin alliance.

This project focuses on the geographical location referred to as “Ballarat" in Wadawurrung country. The map we have utilised is based on previous settler-colonial cartography and may not accurately reflect the Aboriginal cultural landscape.

In the future, we hope to find and develop the technology to integrate Indigenous nations into the Queer-ways map. If you are not aware of the rightful custodians of the land on which you are located, you can learn more at www.aiatsis.gov.au.

Queer-ways acknowledges Australia’s First Nations Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of this land and gives respect to the Elders, past and present, and through them to all Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We encourage you to take steps towards learning more about how you can support Indigenous communities in the fight for sovereignty.
